Cause of Nightmares

Nightmares are very common and people frequently wonder, “What is the cause of nightmares?” Of course, there are several causes of nightmares just as there are several causes as to why we dream. Because nightmares are common and usually a reflection of our feelings, it is important to determine exactly what is causing the nightmares.

Nightmares are unsettling dreams that elicit unpleasant emotions. They are normally terrifying vivid experiences that occur during sleep. When someone is experiencing a nightmare, they are generally awakened from their sleep and have trouble falling back to sleep. Although nightmares are common and normally harmless, if you find that you are experiencing frequent reoccurring nightmares, it should be a cause concern.

Frequent reoccurring nightmares are the most common symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can result from exposure to a very traumatic or terrifying event. PTSD is very frequent among war veterans or those who have witnessed a natural disaster. Other symptoms also include flashbacks to the event or experiencing overwhelming feelings from the event years later. These symptoms can effect and disrupt daily life causing a significant amount of anxiety and stress to the individual.

Nightmares can also be the result of certain medications. Medications that have been known to cause nightmares are those that alter the central nervous system and the neurotransmitter levels. Some of these medications include: Flutamide, which is a drug used to treat prostate cancer in men, Ketamine, which is sometimes used as an anesthetic, and various other drugs. If you believe that your nightmares are the result of a medication, it is recommended that you research further into the drug or consult your doctor.

There are several ways of dealing with nightmares, depending on what is causing them. As mentioned earlier, nightmares can be the result of stress and anxiety during the day. The later processing of that information and emotions usually results in a nightmare. If the nightmares are thought to be the result of a certain medication or drug, one should seek medical advice about the cause before treating themselves. Children also suffer from nightmares. These nightmares are normally harmless, but if they are recurring and affecting the child’s daily activities, it is also advised to seek medical attention.

Nightmares that are caused by PTSD should always be looked into. PTSD symptoms can persist years after the traumatic incident, so even if the trauma was several years ago, it is recommended that you seek professional help. To learn more about possible treatment options, click on the link below.
