Many trauma survivors benefit from talking to a mental health professional (psychologist, social worker, or psychiatrist), a priest, rabbi, or other member of the clergy, or a doctor or nurse. In Getting Professional Help, we provide information about: why you might consider talking to a professional; what happens when you talk to a skilled helper; when should you consider getting help; what are some of the things that might stop you from getting help; who are the different types of professionals that do this kind of work; and, how you might find a counselor. You will be able to consider the benefits as well as the drawbacks of talking to a professional counselor who understands trauma.

Healing and recovery is a process. Understanding this process is vital and can help you gain a sense of control. The Way Ahead has four main parts. The first section highlights what you should know. The second section highlights the skills you will need to help yourself. In the third section, we focus on goal setting. It might seem odd to bring up goal setting in the context of trauma recovery, but it is very important. As humans, we are driven by our desire to have control. Trauma rips this away from us. Setting achievable goals during your recovery can help you to regain a sense of control little by little. Finally, the fourth section emphasizes the importance of rewards. Coping with trauma is very difficult and it is extremely helpful to reinforce success during your recovery.

Websites
The Journey to Recovery websites are ideal for disaster recovery situations where traumatized individuals have little access to recovery assistance due to environmental logistics—for example, when there are few mental health providers available—in situations where public movement is restricted like a pandemic influenza outbreak, or when people fear being labeled because they are accessing mental health services. The Journey to Recovery websites are anonymous, operate 24 hours a day, and can be accessed most anywhere in the world.
There are two versions of the website in use today.
The web-based trauma recovery program Journey to Disaster Recovery™ is a prototype website in use in communities around the country that have experienced a large-scale disaster. The interactive site empowers traumatized individuals to cope more effectively and assists those in greater mental health distress to seek more in-depth treatment from a professional.
The Journey to Trauma Recovery™ program is a site designed to support first responders and disaster responders, or to support those who experience regular exposure to traumatic events.
In both versions, the site helps users restore a sense of control and mastery over their situation by providing knowledge to assist in understanding the trauma recovery process, skill training to manage trauma related distress, and assistance in determining the need for and access to professional assistance.
The Journey to Recovery™ websites can help people from all walks of life including the general public, emergency services workers, hospital personnel, school personnel, and mental and physical health providers. The customizable nature of the Journey websites provides a unique opportunity to generate an adaptable site that is culturally relevant to different users.
